How It All Started
Teri has memories and pictures of cooking and baking in the kitchen with her mom as a preschooler. She never stopped baking and cooking because it brings her such joy to share her creations. In fact, that is why she entered the Duncan Hines Red Carpet Challenge Cupcake Recipe Contest in June 2010.
The contest required the submission of an original recipe, along with a picture of the goodies. The first part of the contest was a voting period. The extent of my plan to secure votes consisted of calling on friends -- Coach Kidd and Libby Jo -- who happened to be two wonderful local radio deejays. Teri told them I would bring them cupcakes; if they liked the cupcakes, they would vote for them.
"My simple plan did not quite go as planned. While at the radio station, Coach and his sidekick, Rusty Bumper, were too busy enjoying the Devilly Good Chocolate Peanut Butter Truffle Cupcakes to talk on air. So, they asked me to do the talking, asking me questions about the cupcakes and the contest. Meanwhile, Libby Jo took pictures of them and posted them on Facebook.
"By the time I arrived home, I had several messages from folks on Facebook asking me if I sold the posted cupcakes. The look on Dan, my husband’s face was priceless as he said: 'I don't know if you realize what you've done, but I hope you're prepared for it!' Boy, was he right! I didn't win the contest, but I did finish in the top 10 in the country, which was pretty fantastic I thought! Not long after, the Charleston Gazette wrote an article about our cupcakes and Lil' Bit of Heaven Cupcakes was officially born in August 2010."
What an amazing ride it's been! A labor of love, literally. Since that day I have lived on less sleep than I think I ever have since my sons were babies; my husband has become the KING of Buttercream, and I have decided that when I die, embalming will not be necessary due to the amount of powdered sugar I have inhaled during the making of our sweet confections. I'm sure it has preserved my insides quite nicely!
